<div style="text-align: justify;">
Join Ron in this debut presentation Episode 1 (YouTube link below), a video traveling on one of his many arctic expeditions. This segment highlights a trip that was undertaken back in the year 2012, flying his DeHavilland Beaver floatplane and landing on an uncharted lake at King William Island, Nunavut. A two mile hike from there to a haunting place in this high arctic region called "BOAT PLACE” - this is the location where a handful of starving English sailors huddled together and slowly froze to death. These were just some of the many doomed crew mates from British Admiralty's Expedition of 1845 led by Sir John Franklin. None ever returned, and not one survived.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After Ron visited this site, he correctly theorized and published in November of 2011 that one of the ships was remanned - based in part on his observations of the live conditions here on the ground at Boat Place, and the fact that the lifeboat's tantalizing final rest position was pointing to the northwest when first found by the initial search party. Indeed, the two ships, HMS Erebus and Terror, were to come to rest on the ocean floor very far apart. Theory published here:<br />
<a href="http://bushpilotdhc.blogspot.com/2011/11/location-of-ships-maybe.html">http://bushpilotdhc.blogspot.com/2011/11/location-of-ships-maybe.html</a><br />
<br />
Ron Carlson has spent over 15 years exploring northern parts of Nunavut, spending much of his time surveying areas near and southwest of King William Island, in search of the 2 famous lost ships that long ago departed from Portsmouth England in an ambitious attempt to find the holy grail route of the fabled Northwest Passage. This was to be a journey of destiny. The ships; HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, were ultimately both permanently beset in the shifting arctic sea ice, and from there, all of the 129 officers and crew were then ultimately doomed to endure a very long and suffering fate.<br />

<b>TO COME - THE BOOK</b> that will be published on the stories of Ron's adventures, dangerous encounters and discoveries, including the chapter describing Ron being the first to discover one of these two famous ships, first in 2011, then again in 2012, as he looked down upon and photographed the silhouette of the wreck, today known to be HMS Erebus, in the calm waters from far above.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In doing some digging on this boat, I have come to find out that it was abandoned in 1954 by a famous local priest who had worked with the Inuit of Cambridge Bay, Father Steinman. </span></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He had it originally towed from Tuktoyaktuk (over 200 miles to the east) and it leaked the whole way. Unfortunately he was restationed that same year and this little ship has since not moved. So here it sits, abandoned on the gravel beach, just like the famous Baymaud in the water next to it, a time capsule that is most of the time frozen under ice. </span></div>

step. I was heavy and the wind must have changed to cross. Took nearly a mile
to takeoff upriver, but made it out ok. Scary river. Now I know how people die
there. If canoeing across, you would have to start upstream and row 45 degrees
up river to make it what is well over one mile across. Otherwise over the
breakers and into the open ocean you go.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On my last hike on the coast there on KWI I saw a cluster of seagull activity so investigated to find a small musk ox carcass being fed on by a polar bear. Also saw a couple of arctic wolves there about too. Like the prior kit fox video, I was hoping to get some up close video by leaving the camera there. When I approached within 200 yards the bear ambled off over a nearby rise so I placed the little GoPro camera strategically there and vacated. When I came back several hours later the camera was gone, with just a couple of plastic shards of it nearby. I guess attaching a string like the last time wouldn't have helped?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have seen now how difficult it must have been for the Franklin men to hunt in this particular place, Except for caribou, which you can approach fairly close (if they happen to be here, I did see very few tracks in the muck flats). The musk ox herd I videoed saw me one mile away and immediately began to move off once I remained still. Same with the snow geese. I was amazed at their eyesight and attention. Whenever I came over a rise they would immediately waddle away (never fly) from a minimum distance of 1/2 mile away. I measured it.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Before I leave this place, had to visit the famous "Boat Place". It is truly a remarkable spot. A finger of land jutting out to the ocean, surrounded by brown sandy colored muck tidal flats. The icepack looming out in the open ocean. I could her the occasional booms of the ice shifting and cracking. To me it sounded like duck hunters in the distance - shotguns unloading.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As I stood there and looked out in all directions, I could just imagine the desperation and despair. For me, just after a few days of hiking this land, it is unthinkable to imagine being stuck here for even weeks, let alone months or years. And here I am hiking and camping in the good weather. How much suffering did they endure through the winter after leaving the ships? Unthinkable.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">They all must have certainly died here that very first winter, after all leaving the ships for the last - that desperate march towards the Back River.</span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Spent the past several days alternating flying and hiking a good part of the southern shore of Erebus Bay, logging about 45 miles on my handheld GPS, zig zagging on foot. Three seperate locations stood out for further investigations where I observed odd looking wooden objects from the air. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On my way on the first hike, I found very old two tent rings. In general, tent rings date as back as old as 800 to 1000 years and up to recent times. These rings are particularly intriguing because of they are on the Franklin trail. They are located along the the northern front of a small rocky enscarpment that rises only maybe 5 or 7 feet - and are placed there for a one reason - protection against the wind. But in reality, there is virtually no protection there, or anywhere here. One can see though that there was absolute attention paid to topography when they chose this location in an attempt to use any slight edge that the terrain contours might offer. This edge was practially nill, as it is with almost all the areas around here - very flat with the ocassional boulder. They are probably Inuit because they are circular. English patterns were square. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To get to these, the closest I was able to land was 2.5 miles away inland. I used two lakes for these puposes. The average depth was 8 feet with fair water clarity from the air, to avoid bouders and shalows.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This was the routine for shore hiking. I was not about to land in the ocean and leave the plane with the tides. The tidal flats are fairly mucky and in some spots, boots sink to lower calfs. I kept my ankle straps loose on my hipwaders just in case that I would have ro roll out of a bad situation, which almost happened a couple of times. I found that when my foot would sink deep in a certain spot, my inclination was to accellerate forward, fast - but you have to avoid this. Best to stop and back track because many times it gets worse. And then this could possibly happen:</span><br />
<em><a href="http://www.alaskacenters.gov/mudflats.cfm" target="_blank">On July 15, 1988, a tragic accident on the mudflats of Turnagain arm near Portage, Alaska claimed the life of newlywed, Adeana Dickinson. She had become mired in the wet silt that is exposed twice every day by the outgoing tide. The ATV driven by her husband had become stuck in the mud and while pushing the vehicle, her leg sunk to her knee. Unable to free her, her husband summoned help, but it arrived too late. The incoming tide rushed in and inundated her. Hypothermia was also a factor as the water was extremely cold</a></em>.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After flying a large part of the southern shores of Erebus Bay and taking pictures of the shallows and deeper waters of the bottom of the ocean there, have made some intriging finds. A couple of compelling targets. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Also found a spot from the air with some interesting objects which appear to have been washed up by a tidal flat. A very straight pole, like part of a ship’s mast. Or more probably a driftwood tree trunk. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But another item nearby that looks to be man made, and unusual. It's just intriguing because there is other small unusual wood debris in this area too.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />I suspect that these pieces were pushed up by the melting ice pack, and very recently, because as one can see in the picture below, the pole has moved in the short term. I think it was ice pack movement from this year because it sits just out of the boundary where the tide comes in and recedes, in other words - it is just barely outside of the light camel brown sandy muck zone which creates the high water line.</span></div>

Also, keep your mouth closed at all times. I probably choked on a few dozen before I adapted. The weather was haunting with fog and squalls moving in and out for half of the time there.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In addition, I flew over the water on 2 sorties, covering almost all of the surface area of the bay and mouth to the ocean. One could clearly see the bottom, especially at the bottom of the bay. In certain parts, which are well protected from the pack ice, like at Beechy Island's bay, there was interesting rock terrain and small rises suitable for a camp. But no sign of there ever being a human here.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Had some scary moments with the engine sputtering several times about every 5 or 8 minutes. On the last occasion it practically quit. Of course it always happens when you are at the most remote point from base, right? </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was at 2,000 feet with nowhere really suitable to glide and land. There was no warning when it would happen. It was sudden and alarming. No time to limp to a safe landing spot, so I had to constantly try to manufacture an out. Luckily in the end, I finally ascertained that I was getting carburetor ice, so applying the carb heat in the engine system quickly took care of that. It made sense - there was a lot of low wispy fog on the ocean shoreline coming in, from the condensation of the melting pack ice. And the weather was overcast with small squalls. All the perfect ingredients for icing up here.</span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;">This zone border covers over 2,000 square miles</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here we go. I flew this morning to the initial spot to get some work done finally. Very far away from here - no man's land for sure. I was prepared to land and spend a couple of days camping and hiking, but this early, nowhere yet safe to land. The one lake which I had hoped to land on was still 80% ice. This lake is so large that there were sections I could have landed, but when the wind changes, you are in trouble. The whole mass shifts and you would probably be locked in. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Going to wait another week or so before I go back.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Spent an hour in mid altitude flying there over the ocean, over water/melting ice observation, then went low and scouted some beaches at about 50 to 100 feet AGL. <a href="http://youtu.be/N7LHxJprU58" target="_blank">Here is a video clip (click here).</a></span><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is spectacular. You can't imagine how big this territory is. You look at these pictures and you are looking across over 50 miles, just this zone, not even to the horizon. These areas are massive, it is hard to put into words. Just at this spot, you see in the picture borders covers over 2,000 square miles. Believe me, I measured it on Google Earth.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This sequence is fantastic. And without the polarized lenses, which I had left in the back of the plane, smart. I still cold photograph pretty deep though. How do I know how deep the water is? This:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What is astounding is that the camera is picking up the bottom on the auto-focus. Of course I have it set to the single focus point that is the smallest (one square) and in the center of the viewfinder. It is actually diving underwater! Note the icebergs are out of focus, this because of the strong zoom I am using, it is looking right down past them underwater. The more out of focus the icebergs are, the deeper the water. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">All foreground stuff blurs out.</span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;"> </span>Have to try and figure out those ratios - a good way to get water depth of uncharted waters from the air. </span><br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;">Original photo, note the icebergs in the foreground are out of focus because with this strong zoom,</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"> the auto-focus is dialed in on the floor of the ocean below</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Not sure how deep this water is in this sequence of pics, but at least 20 to 30 feet, maybe 40 to 50....or more? I hope to find out . I will land when the ice is all out and I have a water depth finder in the cockpit with tranducer on the bottom of the right float. I think it goes to 200 feet depths, so more than enough.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">These are both the same photos, the bottom one with special effects to bring up the detail of the ocean bottom.</span></div>
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;">Special tools used in rendering this photo to bring up the ocean floor include brightness,contrast, sharpness, color, shadows and noise reduction effects. This water may in fact be in excess of 50 feet deep and this with no polarization - which is yet to come.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Boy, this is all definitely the proverbial looking for a needle in a haystack. BUT, if you don't put your line in the water, you'll never catch a fish. Here is the video at low altitude <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7LHxJprU58" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: large;">combing the some of the gravel beaches - (click here).</span></a> </span><br />

couple of hours to refuel and preflight - as I was on my own, which I like
anyway - it’s fun.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I am very meticulous,
so sometimes turtle speed, but who cares what’s the rush? It's blinding light
24 hours a day. I started with an initial stock of 8 x 55 gallon </span></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">barrels of 100LL. The
first three popped open like champagne bottles, the seals are good; no water. I
fueled the plane back up after I landed last evening; for next mission. I
didn't need to mess with the wingtip tanks; didn't need to use them for this
mission, so I was happy about that. That part of the fueling is a pain, having
to go up and down the ladder and lifting and rolling full barrels all over and
back and forth.</span></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Mosquitos are insane here. They don’t care about sun or winds and are swarming anything giving a heat signature 24/7. They follow the carbon dioxide trail we breath out, the heat from our blood, and lactic acid on our skin. Certain chemicals in our sweat also seems to have something to do with it. You better have bug dope on every inch of exposed skin or you are like the guy who sticks his hand in the glass box with the thousands of mosquitos on the OFF spray commercials.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here above are 2 videos that are simulcast; landing at Baker Lake from July 4th. Start and watch them both at the same time, inside and outside the cockpit, timing is perfect. (Keep and eye on the little running clocks under each video - the "inside cockpit" video on the right may run a bit faster, so just pause it if you need to let the video on the left catch up).</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Looks like my timing of early July is almost perfect. I have 35 miles of beach to walk and comb for clues. Flying out to this area every few days and/or staying out there for several days allows me to get this part of the work out of the way, while keeping an eye on ice conditions for over flights of the visible offshore waters. I was able to get some good HD video of all this. Too bad YouTube degrades the video a lot. The clarity of the imaging is spectacular. My Sony video camera is 24 megapixel.</span> </div>

about remote, not even sure if anyone has ever set foot here. It's way way out
there. Found a good landing lake about a quarter mile from the ocean where I
want to comb the beach for clues, about 1/3 from one side of that 35 mile
stretch I eventually need to carefully cover on foot. Will have to be very careful - although the water is crystal clear, many rocks and boulders and the water is only 5 to 10 feet deep.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

I dove in for a couple of passes near them. Was hoping they would form their silly defensive circle, but they just took off on the run and hid. Just kidding, there is NO hiding up here. It’s like ants running down the sidewalk. I did pay attention to pulling up while filming with video camera in hand before I hit the side of the small gravel mountain side. No peering thru the viewfinder, just point and record.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Left Red Lake this morning at 9 am into a vicious headwind of 30 kts at 5,000 feet MSL. Going lower wouldn't have helped much; not being able to lean the mixture and 4 hours of getting thrown around the cabin in low level turbulence would have made for a very long ride. Filled the 3 belly tanks (95 gallons) and the wingtips (21.5 each x 2 = 43) and had to really manage the tank switchovers given the 30 kts headwind and having to factor that in to an already long trip. After an hour into it I was looking to stop after one more hour on my route waiting to see how things were going to pan out, for better or worse. This stop on my route was going to be at God's Lake Narrows sea base (no av gas for sale there) and beg the lodge owner to sell me a barrel, but with the new GEM (graphic engine monitor) I was able to really peak lean and using my trick of just before clock timed tank switchover - "staring down" the fuel pressure gauge for the first sign of the pressure drop before switching tanks (can't screw that up by the way, no day dreaming). This way I am always able to use every drop and know exactly where I am at when comparing the computer's ETA's to what fuel I know I have left, including reserve. I am not going to be the guy who glides into a lake somewhere short of the field and find out I actually still had 3 gallons left in one of the tanks. Always know exactly what you have left in reserve so you can make bullet proof decisions while absolutely maximizing range. Need to do that especially up here. Anyway, made Gillam with a plump 20 of 25 gallons left over in my final remaining tank. Nice.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">However, when I called in my approach in at Gillam, that I was 10 minutes / 20 miles out. "Are you looking for fuel?" came the reply. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Didn't I check the NOTAM's? Of course not. Here we are - the one time Gillam had run out of AVGas. My reply: "Guess we'll be filling up with car gas for this leg". The "what-if's" again, I had thought of that ahead of time and had confirmed my radial could drink that.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">No problem. The guys had a truck with 2 empty drums and off we went to the CANOP, 91 octane. Used my pump and filtration system hooked up to the battery and it worked like a charm, even the auto fuel nozzle. Sweet. Except for the Bull Dog Flies attacking in swarms, it was all good. Btw, Bull Dog Flies are every bit as big as hornets except much fatter and I am told their bites hurt more. They are wildly attracted to heat (especially humans sweating). The entire side of the pickup truck was painted with hundreds of these little monsters. Luckily there was a light breeze that helped and I was covered head and arms to toe.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I took off and then later landed - both procedures with the rear tank which had 100% avgas because I noticed the peak cylinder's EGT (exhaust gas temperature) was running about 100 degrees hotter - low level full rich at about 1,620 degrees. A little hotter than the books say.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Flew up the Nelson River out of Gillam to the coast of Hudson Bay and up to the north all the way to Churchill. About an hour and a half deviation. What a huge swamp this land is - no hiking out of here.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then up the coast and out over the ocean looking for the "Polar Snout". Well, there is still a lot of ice. And where there is ice, there the polar bears stay. In 2003 I flew the same route and saw a ton of bears on the sand flats, but that was mid to late August. Right now in early July, they are still way out there on the pack ice. I flew 5 to 10 miles out paralleling shore, but I didn't want to get stranded over the solid floes because that is truly no man's land if you need to land in any way, shape or form. So....didn't see any Polar Snouts on land, and I'm sure I missed a few on the ice, they really blend in.</span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Dodged a couple of squalls and landed in Churchchill. Tomorrow take off for Baker Lake, then Cambridge Bay. Not thrilled about crossing the ocean (Queen Maud Gulf) will surely be a jagged mess of broken icebergs and floes. There will most probably be nowhere to land for that last hour of that flight. I better be on the ball with headwind, ETA and fuel flow calculations.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here below are a couple of images from 2,000 feet over the Fence Lake near Minocqua. Nikon D3X 24.5 megapixel with AF VR-NIKKOR 80-400mm 1:4.5-5.6D zoom lense with polarized filter. The underwater imaging is spectacular, especially considering that the water depicted in these shots - the actual water top surface condition has a very slight wave chop. This technique should be good for the arctic water overflights, especially if the water is glassy between ice floes. Need to catch it at all at the right time.</span></div>
